From joyce at perlgurl.net Mon Sep 15 15:25:29 2008 From: joyce at perlgurl.net (Joyce Young) Date: Mon Sep 15 15:24:40 2008 Subject: [Uaflug] Hello and looking for an older model motherboard Message-ID: <20080915182529.ssw3cagjcw0g0sss@webmail.perlgurl.net> Hello, Recently moved here from Florida and found this list. I am a new employee at UAF, currently working for StateWide Finance as an Analyst Programmer (mostly doing PL/SQL with a bit of ProC, and Perl). I noticed someone else asking about Pc parts, so I thought I would ask here since I discovered when I pulled my pc out of the box to plug it in, the first boot up (and possibly 4700 miles of bumpy roads during transit) fried my motherboard and took the power supply too (actually I think it was visa versa, but the results are the same). Fortunately I was able to get a power supply, but finding a local replacement motherboard is eluding me, so, I am looking for a replacement motherboard until I can do a full upgrade to my entire system. Anyone have an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ Compatible w/ AGP slot motherboard lying around that they want to get rid of? I could make really good use of it, and am willing to drive anywhere in Fairbanks or the North Pole for a pickup. Please email me at joyce@perlgurl.net if you have one for me. Thanks! Most stores around here want $40-50 around here wanted $40-50 over the price found within the lower 48 States. One of these two stores offered a price competetative with the online stores. All I know... for an older motherboard, you probably found the best place to post for this info. Sometimes, you can find a lot of things on Amazon.com, and with a little luck, the Amazon ships using a specialized (reduced) UPS pricing for Alaska. Usually the item needs to be stocked by Amazon to qualify for this pricing. Shipping costs from any other stores from the lower 48 States will usually cost $40+ (... some also want an arm and/or leg for satisfying shipping costs). Perhaps that's a function of PSU quality? I have been using high end PSUs ($140+, active PFC, etc.) and never ran into any trouble. As far as buying an S939 board, I'd just go with eBay or places like the trade forum at Andtech ( http://forums.anandtech.com/categories.aspx?catid=45&entercat=y ) where you can get a guaranteed to be working S939 board for like $20 shipped (to Lower 48, till you tell them that shipping a USPS Flat Rate box to AK isn't more expensive, hence the term 'Flat Rate'). For a moment I was considering to offer Joyce the board I am currently using, but it's just like my old car, the board works, and the Opteron 185 sitting in it runs everything I need to do just fine (including Vista 64), no need to upgrade. Many thanks! I guess I should have clarified my intention in my original posting - I was/am asking for the motherboard in hopes that maybe someone had lying about that they wanted to give away that would get my pc back up and running until I can mail order (likely from newegg). It's an older item so a replacement for the existing motherboard and it is pretty inexpensive indeed, but as I plan on doing a major upgrade to the motherboard, chip and ram all at once, I thought I would see if anyone here had something me as a stop gap measure until I could order my new stuff. It's so odd to be without my PC at home so I thought I would ask! Thanks for the suggestions and offers and since we have already had power issues at our rental which is an old house, I will definitely look into getting a UPS. Coupled with different accounts for banner/oracle and then meeting maker and whatever else they toss at me here, I know password management is going to be a chore for me. And, my main server has been online 8-10 hours a day for 10 mos... approx. I initially saw some really cheap PSU's back in the late 1990's, and since, have just always bought high end ones as it was a requisite for SMP and Nvidia AGP cards during thouse times. -- Roger http://www.eskimo.com/~roger/index.html -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Many thanks! Welcome to UAF. I'm a student, so I'm kind of new here myself. I think the list is 'dead' most of the time because there isn't really an active Linux user's group anymore... at least, one that has meetings, organization, and that sort of thing. Just a lot of people on a mailing list. (If I am wrong, someone please correctly me and tell me where we are holding the meetings...) You mentioned that you are a programmer. Do you only program at work, or do you have any interesting personal projects going as well? (Websites, games, open-source...) Just curious because I'm a novice programmer. For the past 13+ years I have been working on websites, started with simple html static sites using Mozilla (yeah!) in 1994 and am now a web application programmer, with a focus in database to web applications. I am currently doing primarily database programming to support Banner, so lots of PL/SQL coding with a smattering of ProC and Perl, but before moving to Fairbanks I had been doing almost exclusively Cold Fusion with (way old) Fusebox 3, and I have also supported PHP apps, done a very tiny amount of JSP, got stuck with some ASP for a year or so before it got tagged with a .net,and started done the path I am on now with my all favorite Perl, which sadly I have not coded with for years. My real interest is in building dynamic database driven websites and I really enjoy the rapid development cycle that goes along with it since I like to see something working in a short time frame. Maybe I just have a short attention span :) I am most recently looking at playing with Ajax, and relearning Perl, MySQL, and some PHP (its been a few years). I am also taking classes at UAF, and plan to finish the graduate level Software Engineering Program sometime next year. As to my NIX background - I have done a short stint (1 year) as a Junior Level Sys Admin for a Florida state agency supporting various flavors of both Unix and Linux, and as I started my career in working on the web at a university where I learned to build sites and work entirely in a Unix environment, I am very comfy working in 'nix land, but I have been away from that environment for the past 5+ years and feel like need to relearn everything I used to know about nix land all over again. So here I am, hoping to glean some information from other users in the area. I don't run Linux at home, yet, but one of my pet projects (yet to happen) has been putting up a Linux server at home to backup all my data, and for running source control (likely svn) for easier maintainability of the sites I work on at home. With my current downed PC at home, and an order being placed next for replacement parts (just found out that my video card might have been affected as well), come payday next week I might go ahead and order enough to build two machines instead of just one and get that project going! Suggestions for hardware to build such a machine are welcome. I can put stuff together but selecting hardware is definitely not my forte! Random past pet projects: -- Build and maintain the 501st Legion of Storm Troopers Membership Application and back end approval process. Was done in Cold Fusion originally with an Access db (that is all the host would support in 2002 when the project started). Since then the db has been migrated to MySQL (this was not by me), and I no longer have full responsibility of maintaining the the code, but I will be working with the new team over the upcoming winter to move the code to PHP. I have not done a lot of PHP to date and have been wanting to get some hands on new code development in this language, so this should be a fun project. -- I fully support a couple other websites for my geeky star wars hobby, though they currently don't have a lot of content. Both have PHPBB running, which I need to upgrade, but I am waiting for web host move before I do a lot to either site. I plan to implement Wordpress on these sites too, primarily so that I can have easier maintenance of photos, and whatever else I figure out Wordpress can help me with. -- And of course, my own website which is sadly in need of much work. It used to be a pretty decently sized site with a Cold Fusion host, but when I moved hosts last year, I was going to rebuild it all in something new (I had intended to Fusebox it) and never got around to it so all I have is a silly home page now. I need to moved hosts one more time since I am really unhappy with the new host, so once I move to Dreamhost I plan to use some of their stuff, and Good grief, there goes my lunch hour and now you know all way too much about me; I truly have no shame. Pet past projects have been LinuxBios and a half-butt programing project called Dsctl on sf.net. Dsctl partially works, but I don't have any time to invest in any of these projects these days, nor the will power to complete Dsctl -- project was almost complete too. Since I just bought a house a year ago, I've been pushing a lot of time during the summer into it trying to get everything done. During the winter months are when I have some time for tinkering, but the way it seems, I'm going to have lots of work around the house. So at most, I've just been maintaining two servers & a laptop here with Gentoo and filing bugs. BTW, SVN works wonderfully. Learned it while working with LinuxBios. SVN makes checkouts & submitting patches extremely easy! Future learning, might be invested into Python or finessing my C skills. -- Roger http://www.eskimo.com/~roger/index.html From roger at eskimo.com Tue Sep 30 18:33:34 2008 From: roger at eskimo.com (roger) Date: Tue Sep 30 18:33:03 2008 Subject: [Uaflug] Online Shell Accounts Message-ID: <1222828414.29555.6.camel@localhost2.localdomain> After spending a day reviewing online shell accounts, I'm still stumped as to choosing a good shell account. I've also viewed the wiki's, etc, but most shell accounts listed either appear dead (unreliable) or they use outdated FreeBSD/Unix software. What I want in a shell account: 1) It uses a standard/"well known"/"well worked" Linux Distro (ie. Gentoo ;-), or at the very least, Debian) 2) The organization has been present for a period of time (indicating stability and future presence). 3) The possibility of being able to host svn (Subversion) projects (as well as the normal email & web space). In the long run, I would always start-up my own non-profit org. But I got a funny feeling, messing with the houses electric lines and having servers present w/i the same house seems like a not-so-good idea! (Of course, there's always battery b/u!)
