I was transferring on a leisurely basis my work from RH8 which is now complete and XP. When I signed on the was a menu. That menu is apparently grub and it is no longer there. I still have 30 file I need to come over from XP. I need a way to fix grub OR a way to boot windows so I can abandon ship so to speak thanks C From jbecwar at resdat.com Mon Mar 2 09:42:19 2009 From: jbecwar at resdat.com (James Becwar) Date: Mon Mar 2 09:48:13 2009 Subject: [Uaflug] grub (lilo) failure References: <49AC17A8.2020600@comcast.net> Message-ID: If you boot up with a windows install CD, and select the command prompt, you can use the FIXBOOT command to repair the master boot record (MBR). This will allow you to boot to windows, but not your RH8 and Ubuntu installs. If you want to fix GRUB, you going to need a ubuntu install cd, boot to text mode, mount your root partion and rerun grub. You may need to edit your grub.conf, to make sure all your installs are in the list. -James ________________________________ From: uaflug-bounces@linux0.cs.uaf.edu on behalf of Cecil999 Sent: Mon 3/2/2009 8:30 AM To: uaflug@linux0.cs.uaf.edu Subject: [Uaflug] grub (lilo) failure I have Ubuntu. You might want to look into that. j -- Joshua Kugler Part-Time System Admin/Programmer http://www.eeinternet.com PGP Key: http://pgp.mit.edu/ ?ID 0xDB26D7CE From rogerx at sdf.lonestar.org Mon Mar 9 23:14:56 2009 From: rogerx at sdf.lonestar.org (Roger) Date: Mon Mar 9 23:16:16 2009 Subject: [Uaflug] grub (lilo) failure In-Reply-To: <49AC17A8.2020600@comcast.net> References: <49AC17A8.2020600@comcast.net> Message-ID: <1236669296.24783.6.camel@localhost2.local> On Mon, 2009-03-02 at 12:30 -0500, Cecil999 wrote: > I have Ubuntu. > > I was transferring on a leisurely basis my work from RH8 which is now > complete and XP. (Using Gentoo here.) However, doesn't sound like you're computer literate (or Linux fluent) enough. :-/ If so, abandon ship and reinstall a Linux distro. (Only way to learn.) Heard there's Mint (Ubuntu based distro, but include proprietary packages as well). Check distro ratings. It's near the top of the list along with the rest. -- Roger http://rogerx.freeshell.org From imachuchu at yahoo.com Tue Mar 10 16:34:58 2009 From: imachuchu at yahoo.com (Ben) Date: Tue Mar 10 16:36:18 2009 Subject: [Uaflug] (no subject) Message-ID: <863139.24211.qm@web58002.mail.re3.yahoo.com> First time sending something to the mailing list, if I screw up here's an advance apology. While you could reinstall it's more then is necessary. If it is truely just your GRUB that is borked then repairing it shouldn't be too hard. All you need is a live distro (KNOPPIX, SLAX, DSL, maybe even the RH8 install cd) then use the grub command to reinstall the bootloader (a quick google search came up with many walk-throughs). Alternatively your menu.lst file might be messed up, update-grub can be used to automagically generate a new one but I have no advice on how to use it. Alternately you can use the Super Grub Disk (http://www.supergrubdisk.org/) which specializes in repairing bad GRUBs, but if all you really need are some files off of the old partitions and really want to reinstall anyway then you could just use a live cd to boot up, transfer them to another hd, then wipe and reinstall.
