I just use System Rescue CD.  (Using Gentoo here.)

However, doesn't sound like you're computer literate (or Linux fluent)
enough. :-/

If so, abandon ship and reinstall a Linux distro.  (Only way to learn.)
Heard there's Mint (Ubuntu based distro, but include proprietary
packages as well).  Check distro ratings.  It's near the top of the list
along with the rest.
