First time sending something to the mailing list, if I screw up here's an advance apology.
While you could reinstall it's more then is necessary. If it is truely just your GRUB that is borked then repairing it shouldn't be too hard. All you need is a live distro (KNOPPIX, SLAX, DSL, maybe even the RH8 install cd) then use the grub command to reinstall the bootloader (a quick google search came up with many walk-throughs). Alternatively your menu.lst file might be messed up, update-grub can be used to automagically generate a new one but I have no advice on how to use it.
Alternately you can use the Super Grub Disk (http://www.supergrubdisk.org/) which specializes in repairing bad GRUBs, but if all you really need are some files off of the old partitions and really want to reinstall anyway then you could just use a live cd to boot up, transfer them to another hd, then wipe and reinstall.
Hope something from that can help, --Ben
