Ah well. Such is the life of an independent contractor. So, I'm job hunting again. Programmer and/or System Admin, Fairbanks or Telecommute. Not really looking to relocate, but I'll entertain all offers. My resume is at http://jjncj.com/papers/KuglerAll.pdf Thanks for any pointers or leads! I have Comcast in Maryland, and I pay about $71.30 per month for 20Mbit down/8Mbit up. I haven't had a single problem at all, even on months I go over 200GB. The $71.30 quote includes basic cable as well, but I don't watch it. It turns out that getting basic cable with this internet package is actually cheaper than the package by itself. I hope you guys get something decent someday... Here are Comcast's plans: Performance (up to 15 Mbps downloads with PowerBoost?) $19.99/month for 6 month(s), then $42.95/month Blast!? (up to 20 Mbps download with PowerBoost?) (what I have) $52.95/month Ultra (up to 30 Mbps download with PowerBoost?) $62.95/month Extreme 50 (up to 50 Mbps download) $139.95/month But considering the 200GB cap and the rarity that you'll see full speed from a site, it's not really all that useful to go above 20Mbits. Just my 2 cents. - Erik On Tue, May 26, 2009 at 3:10 AM, Roger wrote: > http://www.greenlightnc.com/home/internet/ > > > Here's a really good example how much Internet services costs within the > Lower 48: > > Package ? ? ? ? (#$@%$) Looking at my usage on my router, around 5-10GB total per month is what I use. Watching some streaming video (ie. NASATV, Gentoo Portage syncing, ...) and no music/pr0n downloads. So, if you've got caps out there, 200GB sounds reasonable! The exclaimed 3-5GB caps by ISP's w/i the last months would be a crying joke & causing most people to pay for unlimited service anyways. Yea. Those bandwidth increases within the last 5 years in the lower 48 have basically left Alaska bandwidth rates in the dust. Of the two, think ACS is probably more fairly priced compared to GCI's capped service. And yea, there's nothing on cable TV anyways. Over-the-air TV is just fine for me. PBS/TBN seem pretty good especially if ya got kids. -- Roger http://rogerx.freeshell.org From rogerx at sdf.lonestar.org Wed May 27 10:49:55 2009 From: rogerx at sdf.lonestar.org (Roger) Date: Wed May 27 10:52:20 2009 Subject: [Uaflug] Cost of Internet service within the Lower 48 In-Reply-To: References: <1243321854.1915.7.camel@localhost2.local> <1243358936.7090.16.camel@localhost2.local> Message-ID: <1243450195.12566.11.camel@localhost2.local> On Wed, 2009-05-27 at 09:48 -0400, Erik Gregg wrote: > Maybe someone could create a non-profit in Fairbanks to compete with > GCI/ACS....HINT... http://sdf.lonestar.org/ might be a good start. One of the most popular and long standing non-profit organizations (from what they say). >From what I've seen concerning secondary providers for Cable or ADSL service, the (telephone/cable) company providing primary access to the service is going to charge a base rate, which usually is not as cost effective as buying the services directly through the Telephone or Cable company! Especially here in Alaska. Usually, these secondary providers do better within geographies covered with multiple service providers, and the secondary provider is usually omitting almost all profit in order to increase customer interest & sales. -- Roger http://rogerx.freeshell.org
