mozilla 1.3 + blackdown java in debian

All:
Greetings! I ran into some problem trying to get java to work(it worked with
sun's version before I upgraded mozilla today). Haven't used blackdown
before.Anywho,

my system(environment):
=========
Debian testing/unstable, kernel 2.4.20
gcc : 2.95.4-17
libc6:2.3.1-16
mozilla -v gives Mozilla 1.3, Copyright (c) 2003 mozilla.org, build 2003032710
( I don't know what version of gcc was used to compile mozilla 1.3 built on
03/27)
--------------------------------------
Mozdev plugin page says
<snip>
Debian Unstable (Mozilla 1.3 or later)	requires Blackdown JRE
( http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/whichjava.html )
</snip>
--------------------------------------
what I did
===========
I downloaded blackdown jdk 1.4.1 , i.e;

j2re-1.4.1-01-linux-i586-gcc2.95.bin &
j2sdk-1.4.1-01-linux-i586-gcc2.95.bin

and unzipped them in /usr/local(as root) and made a symlink to
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and also deleted older versions of java installed
before. Also, I changed the PATH to include the /bin of installation
directory(/usr/local/j2re1.4.1/bin)
-------------------------------------------------------------

Problem:
--------
I can't view java applets/pages and get the error: application/x-java-vm is
needed to view this page.

Question:
---------
Do I need to try the other file( j2re-1.4.1-01-linux-i586-gcc3.2.bin) based on
gcc3.2(in other words, is mozilla 1.3 compiled with gcc 3.2) ? Or should I go
for the SUN's version? Any suggestions/pointers appreciated. I could try other
stuff, before posting, but would kinda like to speed up things here so I don't
want to waste lots of time debugging.

Thanks for your time,

/w4nd3rlust
