Ok, I'll dig a little deeping into this question...

Depends on what kind of a connection you can make.

Ethernet is easy, but for the laptop it would probably require a PCMCIA card.

Serial is fairly simple too, but requires terminal software on both 
sides, but most OS's have it installed with the OS.

LapLink software and cable is required to go from parallel to parallel port.

I think Windows allows direct cable networking so from Windows to 
Windows is rather simple.
The serial cable is basically a null modem cable.  I don't know of 
any operating system that does not have facilities to communicate 
over direct serial link though.  Well, Mac OS doesn't have it built 
in anymore, but it is possible to do.  Mac to Mac is still built in, 
but Mac to anything else would require a communications program which 
can be downloaded for free.  HyperTerm for Windows should work.
