Six months ago memory was selling for about 85.00 per 128MB module. The
manufacturers were involved in a price war in an effort to reach a higher
market share. During the month of August most manufacturers scaled back
production as they were losing tons of money. This effort was akin to the
oil rich nations holding back oil production to boost the price and get rid
of the glut. Same thing with memory. When the price hit around 225.00 per
128MB it was floating at a rate anticipated by most people in the business.
Then Taiwan had a major earthquake which damaged or destroyed a large part
of the electronics manufacturers capability to produce and ship components.
Taiwan manufactures about 60% of all components used in computer systems
worldwide. Unfortunately memory inventories as well as motherboards and
various add-on cards were at a all-time low. Now lets factor in Dell,
Compaq, Gateway and others in a mad scramble to come up with enough
components to handle the Christmas rush and the end result is "Prices
through the Roof". So I will check my own wholesale cost and get back to
you, let you know if the 650.00 or so isn't a little high.
