Re: Linux Upgrade Tips anyone???

In case anyone is intrested, I couldn't find the stinking memory for my
video card anywhere so I just sprung for the new video card after all.

Thanks to Matt for the link to allstarshop.com they saved me $50 on the
ATI video card. I'm now running a Celeron 433 with 128MB of ram and a
16MB AGP ATI-All-in-Wonder Rage-128 card.

It scared me when KDE didn't load up right away after installing the new
card.
I didn't know that the RAGE 128 was incompatable with the RAGE II+
chipset which was on my old card.

Unfortunately I forgot to check if the Rage-128 ChipSet was supported
under XFree86. It isn't. What I did find was that the folks at
http://www.suse.de/ have a driver for the Rage 128 chipset called
xrage.rpm which fixed me up good.

I'm having trouble with my OpenGL performance under Xwindows. I notice a
10 fold decrease in performance executing the same OpenGL code when in
Linux. In specific I've written several OpenGL applications that can be
compiled under windows or linux, the windows binaries run at a much
higher frame-rate than the linux binaries. This is likely to be due to
trade-offs made in the Rage drivers... the windows rage drivers allow
you to tweak OpenGL performance but I don't see how to tweak the OpenGL
performance for linux.

does anyone happen to have tips in this area?
